Not knowing what the future holds is both terrifying and fascinating. From the soothsayers of antiquity to the astrologers of today, the attempt to predict what will happen has been a great repulsion of ours throughout time. There are scientific approaches in some areas (e.g. weather forecasting), but the future in essence remains a puzzle. Or maybe not; On the occasion of the release of her book The Future: A Very Short Introduction to Greek, psychologist Jennifer Gidley - one of the most important scientists in the field of future studies - talks to "K" about how science is trying to better understand the future, but also what awaits us.

She herself began to deal with this particular scientific field on the occasion of a sad series of events. In Australia, in the mid-90s there was an epidemic of suicide among young people. There was a lot of media coverage at the time, and according to it, young people felt completely hopeless, without a future, and that they didn't have the power to change anything. "In my attempt, as a psychologist, to understand some things about how young people perceive their future, I discovered that there is an entire scientific field that deals with the study of the future," says Dr. Gidley in "K". "That's when I realized that I have to deal exclusively with this."
